Downfall – The Outlaw
A rough-edged, riff-stuffed collision of melodic death metal, thrash and death 'n' roll that cares far more about hooks and momentum than brutality.
Gernotshagen – Märe aus wäldernen Hallen
A rough-edged but deeply atmospheric pagan black metal album whose dated synths, varied vocals and long-form songwriting still make its mystical forest world work.
Samsas Traum – Heiliges Herz - Das Schwert deiner Sonne
A huge, melodic collision of black, gothic and symphonic metal whose theatrical excess and extreme dynamics cohere into something unmistakably its own.
Bluttaufe – Mein Fleisch an deinen Lippen...
A remarkably catchy meeting of thrash and black metal, carried by adventurous guitar work and production that lets it breathe.
Wulfgar – With Gods and Legends Unite
A characterful, mid-tempo dose of early Amon Amarth-style melodeath that delivers the riffs, even if 55 minutes is more than it needs.
Harlinger – Kinderschreck
Raw, melodic black metal built around creepy German children's folklore, with rough-but-listenable production and punky sections that keep the album from settling into one mood.
